Lenovo S10-2 3G Netbook Launched

September 12th, 2009

Lenovo already leaked the S10-2 on its website, via a manual, but now the 3G-packing netbook is all official. Probably the most important detail is therefore now available – pricing. To which end, the S10-2 will start from £299. 10856-lenovos102span1
For that money Lenovo claims a number of refinements over the original S10. Foremost of these, obviously, is the integrated 3G modem but there are other, more subtle, changes. The chassis is slimmer and the design has been ‘jazzed up’ somewhat – which may not be to everyone’s tastes, but I think looks pretty good.

The S10-2 boasts Intel Atom CPU, three USB ports, a 4-in-1 card reader and “plenty of hard drive storage.” Those specs aren’t going to shock anyone, but that’s par for the course in Netbook Land. However, Lenovo QuickStart, the netbooks pre-Windows Linux OS, does separate the S10-2 from the crowd. 10856-lenovos102span2

You’ll be able to get your hands on an S10-2 some time in July.

Toshiba Rolls Out Its First Blu-Ray-Equipped P500 Laptop

September 7th, 2009

Toshiba-Rolls-Out-Its-First-Blu-Ray-Equipped-P500-Laptop-2Today, the IFA consumer electronics show, held in Berlin, Germany, officially opens its doors to all those visitors that want to stay in touch with all the latest technologies to be enabled on future products. On that note, several companies are already showing off their latest products, with Toshiba making no exception from the said rule.
Inside the new laptop, Toshiba has made good use of the latest hardware components on the market to provide customers with a high-quality computing and entertainment system. The system packs a large, 18.4-inch display, which is capable of presenting images at a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080p pixels, coming as a complementary addition to the laptop’s Blu-ray optical drive.

The machine runs on Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, coupled with 4GB of RAM and a high-capacity hard disk drive that can provide users with up to 500GB of storage space. To enable a high-end multimedia experience, the laptop has also been equipped with NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics. On the connectivity department, the system will provide users with three USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA/USB connector, 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR wireless networking, a 5-in-1 Bridge Media port, an ExpressCard slot and FireWire.

No word on pricing, but, when it becomes available in October, the laptop should be featured with the HDMI and REGZA link, coupled with Harmon Kardon speakers and Toshiba’s TruBrite technology, for a high-quality, multimedia experience inside a portable PC system.

HANNSpree's HANNSnote netbook now available in US, stuffed animal version hopefully in the pipeline

August 21st, 2009

hannspree-hannsnote-rm-engHannspree’s efforts in the netbook market are finally coming to the US with today’s launch of the 10-inch HannsNote, and frankly, we’re still pining for something a little less vanilla from the company. Sure, it’s the same 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and assorted specs we’ve come to know and sort of like, but this is the company known for devising some of the most ridiculous televisions we’ve ever seen, including a whole series of plush animals with monitors in their bellies. A $380 price tag isn’t gonna win a lot of people over without a little flair, so please, do us all a favor and stick the components inside of a teddy bear, make his stomach the screen and his feet each one half of the keyboard. We’d buy that.

Lenovo's IdeaPad S12 with NVIDIA ION on hold pending Windows 7 debut

August 21st, 2009

nvidia-ion-lenovo-s12_4_600We were all excited for Lenovo’s NVIDIA ION-powered IdeaPad S12, which was gonna be the first netbook to market with the HD-capable chipset — but alas, it was not yet meant to be. Gizmodo reports the company has decided to delay the portable until the end of October, just after Windows 7’s launch on the 22nd. By then it’ll have to face competition from Samsung, whose $599 N510 will launch first in September, and possibly a rumored HP device coming in the next few weeks. We can take solace in the fact that the ION upgrade will only add $50 to the current $499 tag, but having to wait

Kohjinsha's 11.6-inch EX6 convertible tablet says XP, means Windows 7

August 20th, 2009

kohjinshas-11.6-inch-ex6With Windows 7 on the horizon, multi-touch support in tow, people are suddenly interested in tablets all over again; a form factor that didn’t quite revolutionize portable computing as envisioned by an enthusiastic Bill Gates showing that first prototype way back in 2001. And with an Apple event just weeks away (presumably), fanboys of both persuasions seem convinced that tablets are once more the future of mobile computing. Manufacturers are certainly on board. Case in point: Kohjinsha, that just announced its EX6 convertible tablet with 1366×768 pixels slathered across a 11.6-inch LED-backlit capacitive resistive touchscreen. Inside you’ll find a 1.6GHz Atom N270 and 945GSE chipset, up to 2GB of memory and 160GB of disk, 802.11n WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, a pair of front and back-facing cameras, 2600mAh battery, 2x USB, and slots for SDHC/microSDHC, ExpressCard 34 cards, and even DVDs. Unfortunately, it’ll be shipped with XP when it hits retail at the end of this month for ¥59,800 (about $635) — something we expect you’ll rectify on October 22nd. As to whether it’ll support multi-touch under Win7, well, anybody see the appropriate sticker?
